The concept originated with Internet Archive founder Brewster Kahle's visit to China where he saw the Xian terra cotta warriors. Brewster has an idea: recognize those that have dedicated years to non-profit service by having an artist make sculptures of them. The collection of Ceramic Archivists is the result of almost five years of work. The artist is ceramic sculptor Nuala Creed.
This project is unusual in many respects and it is multi-layered. The very notion of an artist being hired to sculpt those that have built an organization regardless of rank, is unique. Finding the right artist to undertake such a project is challenging, but this commission has worked out very well for the Archive, its employees, and the artist.
